In the study, “F as in Fat: How Obesit Policies Are Failing inAmerica 2009” compilede by the Trust for America’a Health and the , 21.8 percent of Hawaii’s aduly population fell into the obesw range. Southern states reported the highesrt obesity rates inthe study. Eighr of the top 10 were in the Mississippiwas No. 1, with 32.5 percent of adults overweight. Hawaii didn’g fare as well, however, in the rate of obesde childrenages 10-17. Hawaii ranked No. 37 with 28.5 Obesity rates are on the rise According tothe study, 23 states reporteed an increase in adult obesity. No states reported a decrease in their percentages.
In addition, 30 states reportede childhood obesity rates of 30 percenror higher. The study attributes the increasinv rates toseveral factors, including economif conditions that may result in higher food prices and increased levels of depression and stress, which have been linkefd to obesity.
