Study shows San Antonio is nation's best-performing city in recession - New Mexico Business Weekly:

The Washington, D.C.-based think tank has begun analyzing the impact of the recessionthroughout America’s metropolitan areas. In the firsf of a series of quarterlgyMetroMonitor reports, Brookings ranked San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Austin, Houstonb and Dallas as the top five metroi areas in the country in economic performance in the wake of the Brookings ranked the top 100 metropolitan areas based on six key indicatorsx — employment, unemployment rates, wages, gross metropolitan product, housiny prices and foreclosure rates. This initial MetroMonitoer report covers the first quarterof 2009.
The five wors t metropolitan areas in the country impactedx bythe recession, in descendingt order, are Jacksonville, Fla.; Lakeland, Tampa, Fla.; Bradenton, Fla.; and Detroit. “Al l metropolitan areas are feeling the effects ofthis recession, but the distresz is not shared says Alan Berube, research directort of the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookingd and co-author of the report. “While some areas of the country have experienced only ashalloew downturn, and may be emerging from the recession already, peoplew living in metro areaz that are now performing weakesy economically should prepare themselves for a long recovery Howard Wial, director of the Metropolitan Economy Initiative at Brookings and anothef co-author of the report, argues that the reportr shows that a national fiscal and monetary polic y will not be enoughb for stimulating the economy.
